Shivraj Chouhan : Bhopal: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement at an election rally that he wants to “take him to Delhi (Centre)”, Madhya Pradesh’s longest-serving chief minister and BJP veteran Shivraj Singh Chouhan is expected to play a significant role in national politics. Chouhan is running for Lok Sabha from his stronghold of Vidisha, an ancient city that is coincidentally situated on the Bhopal-Delhi train route. Chouhan served as chief minister from 2005 to 2023. Congressman Pratap Bhanu Sharma, who defeated the BJP candidate in 1980 and 1984, gained the seat as a result of Indira Gandhi’s post-emergency popularity and the subsequent outpouring of compassion following her passing.
It is noteworthy that Shivraj Chouhan arrived in Vidisha by train from Delhi following the announcement of his candidacy. In the Assembly elections held last year, he guided the BJP to a resounding win; however, the party unexpectedly chose Mohan Yadav to succeed him. Proudly referred to as’maama’ (uncle) and ‘paon paon wale bhaiya’ during his childhood, Mr. Chouhan will be running for his sixth term in the Lok Sabha from Vidisha, a seat held by prominent BJP figures such as the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1991) and Sushma Swaraj (2009 and 2014), along with newspaper publisher Ramnath Goenka (1971).

Shivraj Chouhan said that AB Vajpayee had given him the seat after it was announced and that it was encouraging that he was being given the chance to serve it once more after 20 years. At the time, Mr. Chouhan had declared, “The BJP is my mother, who has given me everything.” Following his first term as an MLA from his native Budhni, Shivraj Chouhan was fielded by the BJP in the 1992 Lok Sabha by-election, which was forced by the resignation of sitting MP Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Eight assembly seats in the districts of Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, and Dewas make up the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat. In Raisen district, the assembly constituencies for Bhojpur, Sanchi (SC), and Silwani are located; in Vidisha and Basoda, Budhni and Icchawar are located in Sehore; and in Dewas, Khategaon is located. The BJP presently controls seven of these eight assembly segments for the Vidisha LS seat, with Shivraj Chouhan representing Budhni. The 2009 Lok Sabha elections were won by Sushma Swaraj with a margin of 3.90 lakh votes, following the rejection of Congress candidate Rajkumar Patel’s nomination on technical grounds. Patel was a former MLA from Budhni and a minister in Digvijaya Singh’s government. A local BJP leader said that the Vidisha Lok Sabha is predominately 80 percent rural, with a significant portion from the Dhakad-Kirar community of Chouhan and 35 percent SCs/STs.
