Russia claims to have stopped a Ukrainian drone attack on Black Sea civilian cargo ships

MOSCOW: Russia announced on Saturday that it had successfully thwarted an attempt by a Ukrainian drone to attack Russian “civilian transport ships” on Friday night in the Black Sea’s southwest, a vital route for both nations’ exports of grain and oil. The Russian account could not be confirmed by Reuters. Ukraine did not immediately respond. In July of last year, Russia declared that all ships bound for Ukrainian ports would be viewed as possible carriers of military cargo and declined to extend an agreement that was mediated by Turkey and allowed for the safe export of grains through the area. Ukraine declared the following day that it would apply the same policy to ships destined for Russian-controlled ports in Ukraine.

The exact location of the attack was unclear. The Bosphorus Strait in Turkey, which cargoes departing the sea pass through, is adjacent to the southwest portion of the Black Sea. Russia’s defense ministry claimed that Ukraine had attempted “a terrorist attack on Russian civilian transport ships using semi-submersible naval drones” in a statement that was shared on the messaging app Telegram. It claimed that Russian patrol boats and warplanes had prevented the attack by using electronic warfare to disable the remaining Ukrainian naval drones and destroying one with artillery fire. It stated that no military or civilian Russian vessels were harmed. The Russian account could not be confirmed by Reuters.
